My MacBook CPU cores get reported as never being any higher than 20 degrees, which can obviously not be correct.

Yesterday I opened the machine up to remove all that excess thermal paste I read about; sure enough there was shitloads caked on and around the cpu/gpu centres. After cleaning it all up I'm pretty sure I put the temperature sensor wires back on properly, but I didn't use this software to check my temperatures prior to refitting the heatsink, so I don't know if they were reporting these values before.

Have I screwed something up or do other peoples' cpu cores read the same? The CPU temperature diode still goes up to about 90 degrees c while under load (i.e. watching a flash video), but the fan is still cranking out a lot of heat so I'm guessing the heatsink's seated properly at least.

>> No.26672 Report Ban Global Ban

did u remove too much thermal paste? srsleh.

>> No.26673 Report Ban Global Ban

boot a linux live cd, make sure you are hooked up to internet and it works...
open a terminal and type
sudo apt-get install lm-sensors
after it installs type
lm-sensors
the out put will tell you cpu temp, then you can know if it is hardware or software related.
im not sure if maybe the temp hw is different on a mac, but this has worked for me on my thinkpad and two other friends hp laptops.

After a reboot I'm now getting these figures while at heavy load (repairing disk permissions, lol). The CPU core temperatures look okay but I don't like how hot the 'temperature diode' is getting.

>> No.26659 Report Ban Global Ban

Get a 4890 for $180-$190, it's an actual 1GB and not this 896MB BS. It's also almost comparable to a GTX 275 especially when overclocked. It will also save you a few bucks.

>> No.26664 Report Ban Global Ban

I wouldn't recommend Rosewill Power supply's, because they have had lots of reports on those models failing, and/or dying within a month,

Your power supply is the last thing you want to skimp out on. Buy a quality, corsair one, or coolermaster, or silverstone.

Stay safe!

I have an hp laptop who's back light has broken for the second time after I took it apart and fixed it. (I'm using this very laptop right now with an external monitor)

I have an Asus EE pc with linux who's wifi capabilities won't work. I'm pissed at both and I wouldn't hesitate to chuck both of them into a molten river if one popped up in front of me right this second.

At my apartment I have various computer parts I got free from a computer lab that was throwing them away. A few motherboards, some memory cards, two 512 MB RAMs, a hard drive or two, and a disk drive, with numerous empty exoskeleton dell desktop chassis. I'm planning to put them together into one desktop after I get a video card and an OS disk. But I still need a laptop that doesn't suck balls. A laptop that can take a beating. A laptop that likes abuse.

mine is nearing the two year mark and still no hardware problems
I even have an ancient i Series with an entire 4GB hdd that still runs great, albeit really, really slow.

Yeah thinkpads are pretty good. Although I had trouble (although it could have been caused by a powersurge from something else), lenovo is all about getting shit fixed and quick. I sent it in for repair and got it back like a day or two later.

Also what distro does your eepc use? You could always put another distro on there instead. One that has better wireless support. (provided that it isn't because you have some out there wireless card)

Yes, that would work, but the CO2 might react badly with your mineral oil. Also, you'd have to do this regularly and unless you have an infinite supply of dry ice sitting around, this will get expensive fast.

A pump, radiator, and a little plumbing would work better and is a one-time thing. Hell, if you seal it up properly, and plumb it right so that it thermosiphons, you won't even need the pump.

So, before anyone says it, I know I probably have a virus, but I wanted a second opinion of sorts.

A little backround info on my system:
HP Pavillion w/Vista Home Premium (yeah I know vista blows)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor 5200+, 2600 Mhz
NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT gfx card

Hokay so: A little while ago I upgraded my crappy old stock graphics card to a NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT so I could run PR more efficently. Shortly after the installation, I noticed some problems with Microsoft Word, it wouldn't open any files on a flash drive or through email, so i figured it was a compatibily issue and thought nothing of it. This week, some of my internet related programs began to fail. Xfire couldn't connect to anything, my COMODO EasyVPN wouldn't work, but I had had this problem since I downloaded it (an hour or so after I installed the gfx card), I now noticed that Microsoft word simply refused to open, as well as two of my good internet browsers, Firefox and Chrome, were just not working. The browsers say that they cannot establish a connection, but Internet Explorer works just fine. I have not tried PR yet, but shortly after I installed the graphics card it would not display any available servers in the server list, it said there were no available ones.

>> No.26653 Report Ban Global Ban

why did u get a 7950 to begin with.... whats PR... but besides that it sounds like you havent been taking care of your computer before the gpu install and it finally reared its ugly head after the install, totally unrelated. and how do u accidentally download a virus if you know what your doing. you obviously did something from the time of installing the 3d card, to now, that you didnt tell us. more info plox.
what AV software
when did u last windows update

>> No.26655 Report Ban Global Ban

Did you check if your power supply could handle the new GPU? Sounds unrelated but my guess is that it's drawing too much power and starving the processor of much needed jiggawatts. This could be causing the programs to fail, too.

>> No.26662 Report Ban Global Ban

>>26655
That might be the problem, the power supply. i remember thinking that my PSU isn't powerful enough, and I guess it isn't. Not as unrelated as you might think?

>>26653
Sorry, PR is a game, Project reality. I got a 7950 because it was the best I could get. No monies, I got it from a friend who gave it to me for free.
Between then and now, I installed Borderlands right after the card, downloaded some music which is normal for me, but that might have been it. Not really anything else though, and i forget the last windows update

>> No.26670 Report Ban Global Ban

Switch the cards back out. If you still have problems it is likely a virus. If not then it was either a bad driver or a lack of power (although I'm more inclined to believe it was a bad driver.)

>> No.26675 Report Ban Global Ban

just reinstall. seriously, not that hard.
also they make programs called anti-virus, you should check it out.

The high end versions of Windows 7 let you download Windows XP mode, which is basically Win XP virtualized. The graphics suck (4 MB video memory), but everything else works fine in it.

>> No.26665 Report Ban Global Ban

>>26652
to note, your CPU needs to support hardware virtualization for this to work. Also most of the time it's disabled in the BIOS, so you'll have to enable it also.

>> No.26666 Report Ban Global Ban

Why would you even want to do this? Ask yourself what would be gained from running a Vista theme in XP? It offers no significant pros. Besides, if you've got a decent PC it's time to upgrade to 7 now. There was plenty of reason to not upgrade to Vista, but all of those reasons have evaporated with the release of 7.

>> No.26671 Report Ban Global Ban

>>26419

no..
dont do this.
i had a computer come to me with this on it that needed fixed.
horrible idea.
its a waste of system resources, made an already slow computer even slower, and now it hangs while doing certain things, locks up when trying to wake it from sleep mode. its just not cool. and it looks shitty. doesnt even really look like vista, some of the folder options and views just dont quite match up.

SUP BROES
I'm trying to build a gaming pc, but I'm seriously out of touch with the current line of processor numbers, motherboard types, and all that jazz. So please, someone, take me gently by the hand and guide me through this throbbing crowd of magahurtz and teraflops.

I've found the graphics card I want, but I still need to find a new motherboard, a processor, some ram and a monitor.

I have this idea that because new PC games are mostly console ports -- or rather, Xbox360 ports -- the current minimum specs for PC games are going to stay where they are for the next 7 or 8 years, and then take an enormous leap forward. So I can just toe the current recommended specs, and I should be fine.

Alright, I'm confused. This is a DDR3 motherboard that can't handle DDR3 speeds? I assume it won't be compatible with DDR2 sticks. The graphics card I listed also says something about DDR3, so would I need to replace the motherboard and the graphics card? Is there any way that having DDR2 would make gaming harder? Load times would be slower, obviously, but couldn't it conceivably be game-wrecking in games like fallout that have continuous open-world loading?

>> No.26621 Report Ban Global Ban

>>26600
Looking it up proved me wrong. The X48 is kind of gay that it doesn't support DDR2 at all (Seriously Intel, what the fuck? Some AM3 boards support DDR2), so just get the slowest DDR3 memory with the best CAS timings and you should be fine there.
As for the video card question, GDDR3 is a different matter, and will not be slowed down by the PCI-E interface at all. For graphics, you can get GDDR5 if you wanted to and your motherboard and PCI-E slot would have no trouble with it. Your processor may begin to bottleneck the graphics at that point, but an E2200 with a 4850 should be fine for now.

Alternatively you could go for the Phenom II tri-core 720 processor. Since you don't have a huge budget, for the price I have heard it gives a relatively nice performance.

Phenom II 550 BE Up in this bitch. 3.1ghz, unlocked multiplier dual-core for only $99.
Get a cheap AM3 motherboard and some DDR3-1066 with tight CAS timings.
Overclock the 550BE and raise the speed of that ram to ~1333mhz.
Then you will be able to play capably for several years, at a cost of only ~$300.

I have no technical knowledge in the area of broadcast, but am interested in amateur radio. What sort of minimum equipment would one need to broadcast radio, and what would a sort of baseline price be?

>> No.26663 Report Ban Global Ban

Alot of equipment - microphones/headsets, mixing boards, etc, (plus all the equipment for broadcasting a radio signal - antennas, outputs, signal amplifiers, etc) PLUS, registering with the FCC for your HAM radio license. My uncle used to have a CB radio setup, and I think all of his equipment cost him a few grand.

Alternatively, you could buy a better quality mic for your computer (or a USB gaming headset with mic), and just set up live streaming (typically it's free, I think). You'll get better sound quality and most likely more listeners, without having to deal with all the FCC bullshit and buying a shitton of equipment.

>> No.26661 Report Ban Global Ban

Sure, I don't see why not... There's a 99% chance your board takes a PCI-E video card, which is the current standard, meaning if some time down the road you want to buy a whole new computer, you'll be able to take the card with you. If it were older and used an AGP video card, it wouldn't be worth upgrading since you wouldn't be able to use it in a future computer.

get a tv tuner card and a remote control, put it by your TV and use it as a DVR to record shows, or to play back stuff you downloaded over the network... MythTV or boxee or XBCD are good for this.

you could also plug in a few xbox controllers and use it to play old supernintendo games or MAME or whatnot.

File server for emergency backups comes to mind. I have a comparably ancient Dell Optiplex GX260 I use to store files on in case my primary computer becomes fucked.
You could also use it as a torrent box if your new computer is louder than your old one. My new computer is ridiculously loud compared to that old Dell.
