>No The Pacific threadWell, here it is.The first episode was pretty sweet, and historically rather accurate with the weaponry etc.I'm not sure how interesting it can be though, the Japs were somewhat incompetent compared to the Germans, and completely wasted their superior equipment (carries, larger guns, zeros, etc.) with silly mistakes. All in all they offered less resistance, though they were even bigger assholes (think we might catch a glimpse of Unit 731?).

How were they incompetent? Perhaps in terms of diplomacy, but they definitely dealt a major blow to the British when they took Singapore, and had the Americans not had sheer dumb luck at the Battle of Midway Australia would have fallen too. If anybody was incompetent, it was the Germans. They're the ones who botched the Battle of Britain with every possible advantage going for them.
>>24754Truth spoken. Japan dealt Britain its biggest military defeat in history. Even in the first episode of the show you see the Japanese flawlessly isolate the American Marines onto the island, cutting their supplies, all the while sinking 3 cruisers. So their infantry tactics were a bit more... liberal with human life. They could've performed a lot worse, and in many respects, I think the early days of the East Asian/Pacific War gives the best glimpse of two relatively equal competitors duking it out in the modern era.
Hanks and Spielberg wanted to do The Pacific before Band of Brothers. HBO is full of faggotry and the Airborne lobbied for Band of Brothers to be the first approved project. Spielberg actually walked off but was forced back by threats of a lawsuit. If America lost at Midway they would've regrouped and relaunched from Hawaii or a recaptured Wake. Also the Japanese were far superior to the Germans in terms of tactics and morale. Even at the end of the War there were stalwart Japanese officers and soldiers who held their position decades after the surrender. German forces surrendered a great deal of the time. The Japanese continued to-death struggle. Germany really only held out like that on the Eastern front against the Russian zerglings. Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

The First War. Literally, the first one, ever. I imagine there would be very little resistance to our invasion, considering we just invented the idea of invasion.

Augustus technically ended the republic.... even tough he claimed to be protecting it. Caesar would've done it if they had given him the time, it was clear in his will that he wanted octavian to succeed him (wich he eventually did). In my view the republic ended when leadership over it became inheritable. But there are other ways to look at it.

It was part Caesar, part the majority of Romans who paraded for Caesar to become almighty leader of Rome.

>>24151You seem to forget the part when he refused to disband his army and marched on Rome. That's called a coup d'etat, since you clearly don't know anything about history. As for whether or not he killed the republic, what exactly was the Roman definition of republic? Was it representative democracy, or just having someone in power that did what the people wanted? Don't apply modern ideas of republic to Roman ideas of republic, they're very different.

>>24232I wouldn't say so, at least in an image form that would be uploaded here, because the world's history is all-encompassing, and it's sunjective to determine what was important (apart from the world wars and certain revolutions like the insustrial revolution)

Yes, but a timeline that only had things as important as that would be pretty general and useless, and as the previous poster said, you can't really get more specific without being quite biased. And arguably it's better to be entirely ignorant than to have a narrow world-view.
I don't care if it's biased towards what somebody else feels is important. That's sort of the point, innit?

Alright /his/ I haz question.i'm really interested in the transition of Western and Eastern Late-Classical culture into Medieval culture - I'm reading Boethius right now etc. etc. you know the drill.I have found random references in my readings over the years to the "Roman Senate", as late as the Avignon Papacy. Now, naturally, this would have been purely a city council/ceremonial but it seems to have held a certain amoutn of power at various times (i.e. Avignon, they offered the Pope a place in the senate as a way of enticing him back to Rome). It also seems to have evolved continuously from the original Republican Senate since there are continuous references from before the fall of the Western Empire (duh) through to the writings of Pope Gregory and Boethius etc and, afaik, no Roman speaks of any "dissolution of the Senate" - which, one would think, they would have mentioned as an important historical event, even if it only had symbolic importance.
